Acupuncture works by stimulating the brain and spinal cord to produce endorphins (natural pain relieving chemicals), melatonin (which promotes sleep) and serotonin (which promotes well-being). These chemicals promote healing and provide pain relief.
Acupuncture also stimulates nerve fibres to block out pain and help reduce the sensitivity of tender points on the body (AACP 2014)
Trigger point acupuncture may be used to help relax tight muscles.
The use of acupuncture for pain relief is supported by an increasing body of scientific evidence. Acupuncture is widely accepted in the NHS and private practice.
